Biking for Phil Keating Fund: hazard

Philip M Keating Fund for the Future.

"Phil's Fund" is a donor-advised charitable fund of the Arlington Community Foundation. The Fund will make grants to various organizations to which Phil volunteered his efforts, time, and talents.

On May 28, 2013 a group of four fit and ambitious friends of Phil, led by his good friend, Luis Gendive, soccer coach and native of Spain, will leave Yorktown, Virginia and pedal around 3,500 miles to San Francisco, California. Tentative plans are for some members of Phil's family to ride the first leg of the trip. If your not able to join the team on your bike, you can support them with a financial donation!

Day 9

We start the day off early in the fog, looks like the weather forcast might let is bike for the day, there calling for rain tonight and tomorrow. We will try to get 90 miles in today so we could be in the middle of Kentucky.

Day 8 complete

A great start in our second week, we have covered 85 miles today, going towards the middle of Kentucky. We had a late start and a little car problem, but that didn't stop us, and we just kept rising till we have no energy left in for the day. The rode has been spot so far, today, a couple of big hills, but most of it flat and smooth. Tomorrow we try to reach Somerset, Kentucky.

Seamus Hooban - Recent Graduate of University of Mary Washington with a BS in Economics. Originally from Arlington, VA. Seamus has grown up with a love for sports. For many years, he played soccer for the Arlington Travel Soccer, and most recently, played for the UMW Varsity team for 2 years.

Lawrence Smith Norton -Recent grad from Mary Washington and I am 22 years old. Loved being a part of a team and setting challenging goals for myself. Well around athlete since a kid. Grew up in Annandale, VA, however currently lives in Myrtle Beach and am looking forward to the next big adventure.

Prashant Singh - George Mason student, finishing up bachelor in Information Technology. Born in India, lives currently in Arlington, VA. Played soccer for many year in Arlington and played 2 years in college. Now coaching in Arlington.

Philip M. Keating, a true pillar of the Arlington County Community, husband, father, lawyer, and volunteer, died suddenly on January 18, 2011, at the age of 51.

Philip "Phil" Keating, born in the Bronx, New York, grew up in Somerset, New Jersey, graduated from Rutgers University, where he was honored as a "Loyal Son" in 1999, and received a law degree with honors from The George Washington University in 1984.

Phil Keating married Erin Devine in 1986 and had three children, Kathleen, Patrick, and Caroline, whom he supported, coached, and loved; he was heavily involved in their school and extracurricular activities and passed on his love of God, family and community to them.

Phil Keating coached his children's soccer and basketball youth teams, was a former president of the Arlington Soccer Club, current president of the Arlington Pride girls' basketball league, and an active member of the Jamestown Elementary School, Williamsburg Middle School, and Yorktown High School Parent Teachers Associations.

As a partner with the Arlington law firm of Bean, Kinney & Korman, PC, Phil Keating worked primarily in the areas of labor and employment and immigration law, was named as one of "Virginia's Legal Elite" by Virginia Business magazine in December 2010, and was a member of many legal professionals associations.

As an active member of the business and civic community, Phil Keating was the 2010 Chairman of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, past chair of the Chamber's Government and Legislative Affairs Committee; and active participant in local, state, and federal campaigns and elections; a member of the Arlington Community Energy and Sustainability Task Force; on the board of directors of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance; a former member of Leadership Alexandria; and past president of the DC Chapters of Rutgers Alumni Associations.

As a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Arlington, Phil Keating was devoted to the Church's teaching on social justice and peace and, as cofounder of the Borromeo Legal Project, he recruited other attorneys to do professional pro bono work to help new Americans become United States citizens.

A man of many accomplishments, Phil Keating touched the lives of countless individual during his life and inspired many to become involved in and appreciate the civic and community life in Arlington County.

Phil Keating will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loved wife, Erin Devine; children, Kathleen, Patrick, and Caroline; his dear sisters, Patricia and Ellen, and brother, Michael, and their families; other extended family members; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it.

Resolved by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly, hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Philip M. Keating; and, be it resolved further, that the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation of the family of Philip M. Keating as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
